Interview: CAST

Alfonso Vidales of Mexican prog rock band Cast spoke for Progstone about the band’s new album Power and Outcome.

What made you go for the name Cast?

The name Cast symbolizes the main actors that are performing in a theatrical play, that means you are acting your sketch in your daily routine.

How do you usually describe your music?

I ussualy think that Cast music is mostly simphonic rock with roots and elements of classical music, baroque, medieval and some inserts of improvisation.

What is your writing process like?

The writing is interesting because I do the music sometimes first and put the basic elements in it like doing the piano section and then drums and bass when it’s needed. Lyrics are incorporated after some cuts on them which I arrange to fit in. I do write lyrics too but on recent albums I prefer my brother Rene’s collaboration.

Power And Outcome - cover

Who or what is your inspiration, if you have any?

My inspiration is classical music. My parents became my teachers because they both are classically trained and I like to compose in that vein, what is very adaptable to Progressive Rock.

What makes Power and Outcome different?

I think that what makes the diference is that I put more emphasis in each and every detail duing writing, recording, and mixing. Of course the composing process and writing, as well as the performance, add value of each and every musician in the band.

What should music lovers expect from Power and Outcome?

Our new and old followers should expect a great presence and production of Cast with this release that puts the band with good image and sound that this present line-up is developing.

What kind of emotions would you like your audience to feel when they listen to your music?

Specially at a concert I strongly feel that our work is a great avalanche of music that progressive lovers really are looking to see and listen to, that will introduce them to a great tunnel of atmospheres. It is a special moment to be in at a Cast concert.

Which do you like most, life in the studio or on tour?

I do like composing music and doing tour helps a lot to continue with the union of the band that keeps our flame alive and creating new music. The writing also takes place while touring.

Pick your three favourite albums that you would take on a desert island with you.

Thick As A Brick, Lamb Lies Down On Broadway and Merlin.
